Midnight Run
I always thought that parents who allowed their children to have pacifiers late into toddler-hood were nuts. Well, maybe nuts is not the right word, but it’s the best I can come up with at the moment. Right now though - I am one of those parents. That’s right - my 2 year old daughter still uses a pacifier. Let me clarify - my 2 year old daughter still uses a pacifier at naptime and at bedtime. My 8 month old daughter also uses a pacifer. She uses a pacifier at naptime, bedtime and in-between time. You would think that I would have learned my lesson the first time around, but nope…sleep exhaustion snuck in and I gave into the pacifier.
When I was pregnant with our first daughter, we went to a labor, delivery and breastfeeding class. In the breastfeeding class, the instructor described different types of babies and how they eat. There was the lazy eater, the just enough eater and the piranha. Both of my children are piranha’s. Once they got going they didn’t want to stop. After hours and hours of nursing and feeling like I always had my belly facing air because my shirt was up I gave into the pacifier. Now, I’m dealing with that decision.
The other day - I was on my own prepping the kids for a party - my soon to be sister-in-laws bridal tea to be exact. (hi Stephanie!) It got a bit crazy - 2 kids needing to get into party dresses, one kid up from the nap too early, one kid with curly hair needing to be combed…dresses, makeup for me, etc. Anyway - in the process of getting ready for the party the little one lost her binky. We got through a few hours without it, but then it was bedtime. My husband went out to get a new binky, it worked for a while. But around 1am, it stopped working. And that’s when I sent him our for a new binky. After an hour of working with the 2 pacifiers that we had in the house - spit out, put in, spit out, put in…I said - go to the drugstore…get a new one. And that’s the story of the midnight run. Thank G-D it worked…he came back with one that worked and I got my requisite 4-5 hours of sleep. Got to love 24 hour drugstores!
